Short term lets public consultation

Do you own or live near a short-term let business? Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æ and Bute Council is asking operators, residents, visitors and interested groups what they think a short term lets (STLs) licensing scheme should look like in the local area.

DEFRA advice - avian influenza

DEFRA has advised the council of avian influenza in wild bird carcasses on Islay. DEFRA is responsible for sampling and analysis of dead birds. The council has made them aware of reports of dead birds along the Kintyre, Islay and other west coast shorelines. We will continue to do all that we as a council can do to support the area. Whilst this is low risk to public health, the council advise the public and poultry keepers to follow this DEFRA guidance: Advice for the Public

Public consultation - Municipal Harbour Authority in Oban.

Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æ and Bute Council has launched a consultation to gauge public opinion on draft proposals to establish a Municipal Harbour Authority in Oban that will ultimately see the local authority take responsibility for areas of the bay that are currently unmanaged. The council is already the Harbour Authority for Oban North Pier, while CMAL/CalMac and Northern Lighthouse all have responsibilities for separate areas within the bay. This will not change, however, the approaches into and out of the bay are currently unregulated

Stay safe around blue-green algae

Please be on the lookout for blooms of potentially hazardous blue-green algae which may have developed in Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æ and Bute’s lochs and rivers during the warm weather. Where there is evidence of this, it would be sensible to avoid swimming or other water-based activities like canoeing or water skiing. Make sure that pets don’t drink or go into the water. Council reminds employers about the need for work permits

Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æ and Bute Council is reminding employers in Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æ and Bute that a work permit is required for all young people aged between 14 and 16, who work part-time while still at school. The council is committed to the protection of children in employment, and has a number of byelaws that state the rules and regulations governing the employment of children – one of which is a valid work permit. The work permit is free of charge and the head teacher from the young person’s school must sign it, as well as a parental guardian and employer.

Is your child eligible for a clothing grant and free meals?

Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æ and Bute Council is inviting parents to find out whether or not they are eligible for a school clothing grant and/or free school meals for their child. All pupils in P1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are currently entitled to a free school meal as part of the Scottish Government’s commitment to roll out free school meals to all primary pupils. Until such times as all primary pupils have access to a free meal, parents can get a meal for their child during term time if they receive any of the following:

Council awards contract for Campbeltown Flood Prevention Scheme

Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æ and Bute Council has appointed Dawson WAM as the Principal Contractor for the Campbeltown Flood Protection Scheme (FPS) – part of the Â£15.215 million scheme that will see a range of improvement works carried out to reduce the risk of flooding in the town.

Council reaffirms commitment to Armed Forces Covenant

Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æ and Bute Council has reaffirmed its commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant – a pledge that those who those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy and society they serve with their lives.

Renovation works progress for at risk Gate Lodge

Sitting at the base of Dunoon’s medieval castle lies the Grade B listed Gate Lodge. The property is currently on Historic Environment Scotland’s buildings at risk register. As part of Dunoon’s Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS), Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æ and Bute Council is progressing with renovation plans to rescue and bring this much-loved building back into use.     Work started in May 2022 to install new windows, doors and floors along with drainage works to the exterior of the building. Work will continue until autumn and then a second phase will start to fit out the interior.
