D is for Dangerous Buildings

The council鈥檚 building standards team is responsible for ensuring members of the public are kept safe.

Tony Casci works as an Area Team Leader and part of his remit involves dealing with dangerous buildings.

鈥淏uildings can become dangerous for a number of reasons,鈥 he said, 鈥淪torm damage, fire damage, vandalism, ground subsidence and neglect are just some of these. Whilst property owners are responsible for maintaining their buildings, this doesn鈥檛 always happen and these buildings can often fall into disrepair.

鈥淲hilst we make every effort to ensure that the owners fulfil their responsibilities to carry out any necessary repairs, our immediate priority is to make sure that any danger to the public caused by dangerous buildings is removed. This can mean having to close streets and evacuate buildings, but our priority is to safeguard the public.鈥
